Semester 2 Video Reflection

Projects

I completed three big projects throughout the course of second semester in Video Production. They included: Music Video, High School Trailer, and Short Film. Each project had different specifications and due dates/ deadlines.

Music Video

This is the first project we completed in second semester for Video Production. It took roughly three to four weeks from beginning to end. We remade the Runaway music video by Kanye. Our main challenge for completing this video was the amount of people we needed to complete it. The original video used around twenty ballet dancers, but because we can neither have that many people taken out of class nor can we take the amount of time to find that many dancers, we went with a smaller number of eight. We then had to get an adequate setting for our music video shoot, so we went with a combined music room/courtyard setting. We learned that creating a full three minute production took a lot more work than we anticipated, so we had to get many more shots for the video. We got a lot of positive feedback for this video. The amount of effort, entire cast, variation of shots, and editing allowed us to make a great video.

High School Trailer

This was the second video we completed in second semester for Video Production. I was with Gianni and Isaiah again for this assignment. This video took much longer for us to complete, around two months. We had to set up a complete storyboard, make a cast list, audio and script, and of course shoot and edit. This video should not have been hard at all for us to complete, our schedules were clear for the most part and we had all the necessary tools to get the assignment done on time. However, due to our lack of motivation to get it finished we had to rush at the last minute to get a "finished product" onto the table. This was very apparent in the final submission of our video when the entire class watched it. From this experience we learned that, while we finished it on time, procrastinating on a large project like this can be disastrous.

Short Film

This was a final video assignment in second semester for Video Production. I was with Grace, Jackson, and Ariel and we were on a mission to complete a 2 month short film production. As with the high school trailer, we set up a story board, made a script, cast list, and a treatment. We then spent three weeks shooting our actual video as long with a week editing to get a final product. We had little to no issues except for figuring out schedules. When it came to reflection about our video, it was all very positive. Taking all of our skills throughout the year we were able to create this final short film, one that my group was very proud of.

Time Management

I had moments this semester when I didn't use my time as wisely as I should have, but for the majority of the time I found myself paying attention and contributing to group assignments. I always turned in personal assignments in on the due date, with a couple assignments even turned in early. With so many possible distractions occurring in school, I found myself most productive when I had my headphones in and concentrated on my own work. This was only effective when working individually, however, as group assignments need constant communication and collaboration. Whenever I did get my assignments done early, I would work on homework for other classes, and when I had none I would spend the time working on individual focus activities.

Strengths and Weaknesses

Strengths

My greatest strength in class would have to be my positive attitude and collaboration between my peers. I bring whole ideas to group discussions, and I'm always in a good mood.

Weaknesses

Like I stated above, I had the tendency to get distracted at times. This limited my work efficiency and output occasionally. I can improve on keeping myself from becoming distracted by being more focused and on task from both a day to day and year long standpoint.

Summary

I really loved the friendships I formed this semester. People I hardly knew became some really good friends of mine this semester both from the class and the overall atmosphere. If I had to take anything away from this semester in Video Production, it would have to be that angles and variation of shots in a video can change the entire perspective and scope of the scene. A goal I'd like to set and keep for next year would be to continue building great relationships with my other classmates and friends, as well as growing as a student academically. I wouldn't want to change anything about this year. This was a great year for me in school, and hope to carry that into summer.
