Video Production Final
Semester Projects
ONW: 1 in 2000
This project was one of the first projects we did in Exploring Video. The subject was to capture a story about one of the many students at ONW. I completed this project very easily and quickly, due to the fact that we didn't need any B-roll for this video and was instead a straight interview with the interviewee. I faced little to no challenges with this video except for a few technical difficulties with the SD cards that we later fixed. As this was one of my earlier videos, I came into the video process with almost no knowledge of how to operate the camera or Adobe Premiere. With that I learned how to film and edit my videos. I was given feedback such as: cut out the :"bloopers" at the end of a professional video, move the camera so the subject of the video isn't looking directly into the camera, and fixing jump cuts. We moved on instead of re-editing these videos because they were some of the first videos the class did.
ONW Basketball Sports Story
The basketball sports story for ONW NOW was my best work so far. This video was used in the ONW NOW video the entire class made for the final project. We were allowed to work with partners in order to complete this video and this is where I find myself succeeding most. It took a very short amount of time, once we acquired the footage from interviews and the actual basketball game, editing took almost no time at all. The only challenge we faced was the game scheduling but we were fortunate to have a game at home just in time for the final production of ONW NOW. In order to complete this video we used all of our skills from the entire semester. We have not yet received any feedback for this video.
My overall opinion of my videos is pretty solid. I feel as though my last couple videos before the basketball story have been lackluster and have been completed late, but have had the necessary content to secure an appropriate grade. The last video, the basketball story, I feel has been my best. Working with a partner makes life so much easier and although it is not what you always do in the professional workplace, is overall a much more positive experience for me.
Time Management
My time management in class started off very strong in the beginning of the year but had declined until I promised myself and Mrs. Smith that I would operate at my best again after Feature Story 2. I had done very well before the first feature story, getting all of my work done early and having extra time to focus on editing and writing blog posts. After ONW 1 in 2000 though, my production value had declined leaving me to finish my videos late and scrambling to get caught up with the rest of class. This last video has not only been my most productive video but also my best quality contributing to a stress free environment to complete re-edits and write blog posts.
Strengths and Improvements
My strengths are with the collaboration of other students and project management after my second feature story. I find it easy to communicate and collaborate with other students in order to achieve a goal and managing my time in order complete my assignments on time. I need to improve most in technical skills (editing and shot quality) and communication.
Summary
I loved creating our very own ONW NOW at the end of the semester. Collaborating with everyone to complete the entire production was an amazing feeling. I wouldn't change anything besides the time in the middle of the semester where my video quality and production dipped. I learned a lot about how to get good B-roll, the difference between feature stories and news stories, the six shot system and rule of thirds and much more. I look forward to getting into the entertainment strands of video most next semester and making short films.
